The state Commissioner for Forestry, Mr Tunji Akinosi, gave the advice while addressing members of the Tree Planters’ Association, at Olokemeji Forest Reserve in Odeda council area.
The commissioner said that such practice would help to mitigate the negative effects of climate change.
‘‘It is important that residents should be conscious of their environment, as forests provide habitat for wildlife and help remove dangerous greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
‘‘This will help in stabilising and sustaining the environment as well as the human health.
‘‘There is a rule that says once you cut one tree, you should replant five.
‘‘It is pertinent for us to inform and educate our people about the usefulness of planting trees, as burning of trees is hazardous to health,’’ he said.
The commissioner said that government would continue to ensure peaceful and habitable environment for residents of the state.
In his remarks, Mr Olakunle Awoniyi, the Project Manager, Ogun chapter of Processed Wood Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (PROWPMAN), pledged the group’s support for the state government.
Awoniyi noted that 42.5 hectares of the 50 hectares of indigenous trees proposed by the PROWMAN had been established between 2016 and date.
He assured that the remaining seven and half hectares would be planted before the end of 2020.
