The Kwara State Government has expressed its determination to make the State University, Malete in Moro local government area of the state an enviable institution among its peers, not only in Nigeria but also international.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who stated this over the weekend at the seventh Convocation and 10th year anniversary of the institution, said public resources would judiciously be deployed to ensure that the state reclaim its lost glory in all spheres.
Represented by his Deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi, the Governor, who said the state used to be the reference point for excellence, particularly in Northern Nigeria, when the state paraded the best in the fields of education, healthcare, law, agro-processing, and entrepreneurship, among others, lamented the present pitiable situation of the state.
While reiterating his resolve to build a state with food security and zero hunger with the capacity to feed the whole of Nigeria, the governor challenged the University to join his administration in the plan to make the state the agric hub of West Africa by coming up with cutting edge-technology and ideas to realise the vision.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor AbdulRosheed Na’Allah, said there are identifiable areas of challenges that confronted the University, pointing out that for the past five years, the institution has not received subvention from the government.
Lamenting that the stoppage of subvention had adversely affected the finances of the institution where some critical teaching and research facilities could not be provided, Professor Na’Allah called for adequate funding of the university to compete favourably with contemporaries within and outside the country.
The Vice Chancellor, who listed some of his achievements in office as the longest serving Vice Chancellor in Nigeria, said the institution has grown in width and breadth with establishment of Microfinance bank, FM Radio station and establishment of solar farm, while Television station is in the process of completion.
The University graduated one thousand , one hundred and ninety six students in the 2018/2019 academic session.
Out of this number, twenty five students were awarded with first class degrees, five hundred and ninety two second class Upper, five hundred and thirty three Second Class Lower, and forty six third class.
The University also produced five PhD holders and one hundred and fifty nine masters students.
