Child Destitution Bill passes 2nd reading

A bill seeking the establishment of a National Commission on Child Destitution has passed second reading at the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

A statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakka, Bashir Rabe Mani, issued in Sokoto on Thursday, said that the bill was sponsored by the senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District and twenty of his colleagues.
According to the statement, when established the Commission would serve as an intervention programme to eradicate child destitution in Nigeria

The Commission also aims at rehabilitating the victims, as well as prohibiting the menace of Child destitution in the country.

Senator Wamakko while leading the debate was quoted as saying that the Book Haram insurgency was aggravated by the problem of Child destitution.

Wamakko who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, further observed that “we are all living witnesses of child destitution to the society, particularly over the last ten years”.

”The malady of child destitution in Nigeria has aggravated the menace of Boko Haram, provided fodder for political violence and militancy”, he stated.

“It has also fuelled ethno-religious crises and acted as a catalyst to a variety of other social problems”, he said.

Senate President, Dr Bukola Sarki, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Establishment, with a four -week time frame.
