Secondary School students across Edo State have been advised to adequately embrace the present state government educational reforms being initiated by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Anti Human Trafficking Issues, Comrade Solomon Okoduwa, made this on Friday at St. Maria Goretti Girls Secondary School, Benin City during an advocacy against human trafficking and irregular migration.
Okoduwa, urged the teachers to brace-up in order to improve the morals, discipline and academic performance of students so as to dissuade them from engaging in activities capable of ruining their future.
According to him, “This school has made name for itself. It has produced best brains that the country can boast of today- including lawyers, judges, doctors and big women that have power and affluence. You can only achieve all these successes only if you are committed to your studies.”
“Don’t be deceived to embark upon journey through the dessert and Mediterranean Sea. Thousands have reportedly died on their way to Libya and many are imprisoned there.”
He said, “They could use your relatives, including your parents and pastors to talk to you to embark on this fruitless journey abroad. When they come simply reject their mouth watery offers”
“The government and the NGO who is partnering with us (RuthChild Foundation) are not saying don’t travel but travel the right way. We want you to travel and become ambassadors of your school and this country. Those who want you to travel through the dessert don’t mean well for you and your future. Don’t you want to become a doctor? Don’t you want to become a lawyer? Don’t you want to become a Senator? And don’t you want to become wife of the president of this country or even the president of this country?…”.
He used the occasion to play a 10-minute documentary to further educate the students on the dangers of irregular migration.
