The bill seeking the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Silame, Sokoto State, sponsored by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has passed second reading at the Senate.
A statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Bashir Rabe Mani, made available to newsmen in Sokoto said that the bill scaled through the second reading on Wednesday.
The statement said that the former governor who now represents Sokoto North Senatorial District led the debate on the bill at the Senate’s plenary.
According to the statement, the bill seeks the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic at Silame, the headquarters of a local government of the same name in Sokoto State.
He said that the bill was aimed at creating more opportunities for students in the north-west who find it difficult to gain admission into institutions of higher learning after their secondary education.
The statement also quoted Senator Wamakko, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Secondary and Basic Education, as expressing the hope that the proposed polytechnic would result in the development of high level manpower in the technological sector which was necessary for national development.
