Worried by the traffic gridlock in Ilorin, the State Capital, the Kwara State House of Assembly has directed the State Road Traffic Management Authority to wade into the indiscriminate establishment of Motor Parks, along roadsides within Ilorin Metropolis, thereby inhibiting vehicular movement.
This is part of the resolutions of the House, following a Matter of Urgent Public Importance, raised by member representing Oke Ogun Constituency, Barrister Kamal Fagbemi on the “Indiscriminate Setting Up of Motor Parks along road side in Offa Garage area of the state capital”.
The Deputy Speaker, Chief Mathew Okedare, who presided over the sitting, while reading the resolutions of the House, said the need became imperative for KWATMA to wade in, so as to sanction erring transporters, to check the ugly trend.
The House equally directed the State Ministry of Works and Transports, to liaise with Ilorin South and West Local Government Councils, to embark on sensitization on the dangers inherent in setting up motor parks along road sides and ensure that transport operators, strictly adhere to the motor parks assigned to them, to ensure free flow of traffic within and outside the Metropolis.
Hon Fagbemi had while raising the Matter, expressed worry over the conduct of some transporters in creating illegal Motor Parks, in spite of the establishment of Motor Parks, in the state capital and enjoined the House, to wade- in, to salvage the situation.
Members representing Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe and Ilorin Central Constituencies, Hon Ahmed Ibn Mohammed and Hajia Segilola Abdul Kadir, who contributed on the Matter, disclosed that the practice was not restricted to Offa Garage alone, but also Maraba, Sawmill and Oko olowo areas of the state capital and called for urgent action by the relevant government agencies to ensure strict compliance with the state traffic law.
