Group to build capacity of journalists on reporting human trafficking issues

An NGO, Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL), says it has
concluded arrangements to train some select journalists on reporting human trafficking issues.

The group made this known in a statement signed by the National President, Mr Adaramola Emmanuel, on Tuesday in Abuja.

The organisation stated that the training, scheduled for Feb. 20 and Feb. 21, was to improve the capacity of the journalists on
new trends in human trafficking and the role of the media in preventing and protecting victims.

It stated that “the need to mitigate increased rate of trafficking in persons, child labour and child abuse in Nigeria is of high
interest to government and people of Nigeria.

“Nigeria, being a transit, destination and source, the media over the years played significant roles in mitigating the 21st century
slavery which is affecting many people.

“NACTAL, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and Nigeria
Immigration Service (NIS) is implementing a project on Civil Society Actions to Combat Child Trafficking and Child Labour
in Nigeria and Border Communities.”

The statement added that the project was with the support of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) within
the framework of support to free movement of persons and migration in West African.

It added that the project was jointly funded by European Union and ECOWAS Commission with the aim
of combating irregular migration.
