Kano Grants Amnesty to 39 Repentant Cattle Rustlers

Lola SERIKI -IDAHOSA, Kaduna
Kano state government has granted amnesty to 39 ‘repented’ cattle rustlers in the state.
The repented criminals were until recently among those supposedly involved in cattle rustling, kidnapping and other crimes within Falgore forest in the state.
The remorseful persons independently and separately submitted themselves to the member representing Sumaila Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Alh. Zubairu Hamza Massu, who in turn handed them over to the state Police Command.
All the 39 persons publicly signed an agreement with the state government, facilitated by the state Ministry of Justice that they would on no account revert to crime and would remain law abiding members of the society engaging themselves in legal activities.
Addressing the repentant rustlers at a well attended ceremony at Massu, Sumaila local government area, the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje announced that government would provide amnesty to rustlers “provided they repented before being apprehended by security agencies”.
Noting that the activities of the rustlers such as rape, killings, abduction and banditry have paralyzed economic activities in communities particularly in Sumaila and Doguwa local government areas, he stated that his administration “is working out modalities to train and empower the repentant criminals so that they would become productive citizens and re-integrate fully into the society”.
While congratulating the apologetic criminals for changing their ways, he advised community members to embrace them as brothers and to help them build a better future, as men of honour.
Governor Ganduje commended the state Police Command who with the support of vigilantes and community leaders, are working relentlessly to rid Falgore and Gomo forests of criminals thereby paving way for peace and return of hitherto sacked communities.
The state Commissioner of Police, Alh Muhammad Musa Katsina noted that the criminals, “having realized the superior engagement power of the Police, were left with no option but to surrender”.
