Police Nab 52The Kwara state police command has arrested 52 people for alleged disorderly conduct during the state local government poll which held on Saturday, the 18th of November.
Briefing journalists in Ilorin on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, Lawan Ado, said the 52 suspects were arrested by security operatives attached to Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) along Fate road, Ilorin for “conducting themselves in various forms of disorderly manners within the vicinity of KWASIEC office during collation of final election results on the night of 19/11/2017 while others were arrested around Adeta area, Ilorin, Laolu unit, Alapa and Morakinde’s compound in Oyun local government area for electoral offences which include snatching and destruction of election materials during the last local government election of 18/11/2017.”
Similarly, the CP disclosed that two other suspects , Adeyemi Bolanle and Olajide Samuel, were arrested on the election day by security operatives attached to St. Williams Primary School, Taiwo road, Ilorin for allegedly destroying ballot papers “by burning same. ”
Lawan Ado said all the suspects would soon be charged to court on completion of investigation.
On allegation of partisanship by the police during the election, the police boss refuted the allegation, saying the police did not take side with any political party but acted professionally to ensure a peaceful and hitch free poll. He gave kudos to his men and other security agencies for acting professionally to ensure the election was largely peaceful across the state
He warned against any unlawful protest that could jeopardise the peaceful coexistence in the saying, saying the police would act swiftly against any unlawful conduct. “Yes, there is freedom to protest peacefully but when that liberty is abused resulting in wanton destruction, the police will not hesitate to bring such people to book, ” Lawan Ado cautioned.
