Kwara Media Houses Repositioning: APN Guber Candidate Urges Probe

By Steve Oni, Ilorin

A governorship candidate on the platform of Alternative Party of Nigeria (APN) in Kwara State, Amb. Muhammed Abubakar Muhammed, has demanded immediate probe of the sum of over one billion naira allegedly spent on the repositioning of the three government-owned media houses in the state.

He particularly urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as well as the anti graft unit of the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) to probe the purported restructuring of the media houses, saying that with the humongous amount allegedly spent on the exercise, it was disturbing that there was practically nothing to show for it as the media houses are in comatose.

The APN stalwart, in a personal statement issued to journalists in Ilorin, the state capital, said the inability of the Kwara state Broadcasting Corporation to broadcast Ramadan programmes this year was worrisome as majority of the people were expecting the station to fully function during the Ramadan period.

Describing the development as a deliberate attempt to kill all the media houses and cut the people of Kwara North off the activities going on in the state, the governorship candidate lamented that this was the first time this would happen in the state during the month of Ramadan, with no hope of the station coming on air due to lack of operational equipment and running costs.

He was equally pissed off that the Herald Newspapers which used to be the pride of the state with people across the country always struggling to get copies of the newspaper, hardly comes out now.

Amb Muhammed challenged the outgoing governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed of the legacy his government plans to leave behind, describing the death of all government agencies and parastatals, including lack of funding of the Kwara United Football Club as a bad legacy.

Amb Mohammed described the non payment of two months salaries of the workers as an act of wickedness especially during the holy month of Ramadan, urging him to pay the workers their entitlements promptly.

He also called on the incoming administration to look into the plight of the workers for them to resume their normal operations.
