Kwara: PDP Condemns Attacks On Ilorin Residents By Suspected APC Thugs

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara state has condemned an alleged attack on residents of Ilorin, the state capital, by some suspected thugs loyal to a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Waziri Yakubu Gobir.

The PDP made the condemnation in a statement signed by its state Publicity Secretary, Tunde Ashaolu.

According to the statement, there were reports that residents, passers-by and shop owners along major streets in Ilorin, the state capital on Thursday scampered for safety, as the suspected thugs brandished dangerous weapons, thereby, creating fears in the minds of the residents.

“Some of the areas the thugs were sighted along with the governorship aspirant are Ibrahim Taiwo road, Sawmill area, Abdulazeez Attah road, Agaka area and the popular Oja-Oba market,” it added.

The PDP asked security agencies in the state to conduct investigation into the matter.

The statement reads in part: “The attack was another indication of the plans of the APC to unleash violence on the good and peace-loving people of Kwara State in the 2019 general elections.

“We frown at any illegal act capable of breaching the peace and security of our dear state. Politics should not be seen as a desperate game.

“We, therefore, call on politicians in the other camps to play politics with caution and warn their loyalists to desist from molesting innocent citizens of the State.”

The party also recalled that it had earlier in the week raised the alarm over alleged house-to-house mop-up of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) by some staff of a private radio station in Ilorin, owned by a governorship aspirant of the APC.

It described the move as shameful and dubious, and urged police in the state to investigate the matter, stressing that the act is capable of truncating the nation’s democracy.

The PDP called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take note of this illicit act, emphasising that it is a gross violation of electoral rules.
