135 lives were said to have been lost in various road accidents across Bauchi State between January and October, 2017.
This was contained in a statistics of road crashes by the Bauchi State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) between January and October 2017.
The statistics also indicated that 1,118 others obtained varying degrees of injuries within the same period.
According to the report, the figures were obtained from 244 road crashes involving 2,148 people and 273 vehicles.
It further indicated that 39 of the accidents recorded were fatal, 145 serious while 53 were minor.
It further disclosed that the highest number of accidents was recorded in April with 35 accidents while the least number of accidents were recorded in June with 12 accidents.
It however stated that the highest number of deaths were recorded in May and March with 33 and 31 deaths respectively, while the least number of deaths were recorded in June and January with three and five deaths respectively.
Speaking on the report, the Bauchi FRSC Sector Commander, Abubakar Najume, said that most of the road crashes that occur on the highways as a result of over-speeding.
He said that another major cause of accidents was the lack of adherence of road traffic signs and rules by drivers.
Najume said that the command is vigorously enforcing the installation and use of the speed limiter device which he said is yielding results.
“The drivers are now complying with us on the policy. In fact, they are the ones now coming to ask us where they can buy the device.
“You see, this is so because when most of them who have refused to install the speed limit device on their vehicles travel to other states, they will be sanctioned and be forced to pay the fines.
“In Bauchi, we’ve been enforcing the use of the speed limit device on commercial vehicles and I am glad to inform you that it is yielding positive results unlike when it started,” he said.
The FRSC Boss therefore urged commercial drivers to install the device on their vehicles adding that anyone found without the device will be made to face the law.
He also called on other motorists to avoid over-speeding and other acts that will endanger their lives and that of other road users.
