The trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki, that was to hold today(Friday) has been again postponed to next week Friday, March 18.
This is as a result of Saraki’s lawyers led by Kanu Agabi, SAN, instead of commencing with the trial made a submitted an application challenging Code of Conduct Tribunal’s jurisdiction to try his client for failing to declare his assets as alleged when he served governor of Kwara State.
The Senate President had arrived the tribunal under tight security, but the trial couldn’t go on as the tribunal quickly ended sitting by acceding to the request of Saraki’s lawyers challenging the tribunal’s jurisdiction, an application which Agabi later told journalists that it was in the “interest of justice.”
The application challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal came as a surprise to many considering that a similar challenge had been brought but was quashed by the Supreme Court has jurisdiction and also settled the issue of quorum of the tribunal.
nationalTRAIL also learnt that Saraki’s lawyers had failed to share their application with prosecutors prior to the commencement of sitting today.
