Sokoto State Governor, Barrister Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said that some of the state laws were so obsolete that they still have “pounds and shillings” n their provisions.
The governor who spoke while declaring open the 2017 Law Week of the Sokoto State branch of the Nigeria Bar Association said the proposed general review was aimed at updating the laws to meet current challenges.
He described the relationship between the executive and judicial arms of government as very cordial and that his administration was committed to improving the judiciary within the limits of available.
According to him, the state government has placed order for new vehicles for distribution on loan to magistrates and judges of lower and upper sharia courts to save them from the indignity of “ridding okadas”.
He said that his administration had recruited seventeen legal practitioners and would be recruiting more to address any shortfall in the state ministry of justice as well as address the deficit in the number of high court judges and judges of the Sharia court of Appeal.
The former speaker of the Federal House of Representatives spoke in favour of amendments that would give more allocation to the state and local governments in the revenue sharing formula and those that would allow states to generate and distribute power without evacuating it to the national grid.
Others include removing the railway from the exclusive legislative list so that states could invest in it as well as separating the office of the federal attorney-general from that of the minister of justice in order to remove politicization of the former.
Furthermore, Tambuwal wants the appointment of state representatives in commissions such as the federal character commission, national population commission and fiscal and revenue mobilisation commission to be made by the states and screened by their houses of assembly.
