Taraba indigenes Excited Over Supreme Court Verdict On Rivers’ Gov

By: Lateef Taiwo, For unexplained reasons, Taraba people have gone into jubilations over the verdict by the supreme Courty which upheld the election of Nyeson Wike as Governeor of Rivers State.Apparently due to certain similarities betwewo cases or in admiration of the courage of the supreme court judges, our correspondent reports that, jubilations erupted across the state shortly after the Supreme Court retained Bar. Nyesom Wike as governor of Rivers state. This was even as members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) may have received the news with mixed feelings. Supporters of Governor Darius Ishaku were seen in groups all over the state capital, Jalingo, hailing the verdict. At the state’s party secretariat, party faithful were seen discussing the development, even as a group of youth and women group sang solidarity songs. Leader one of the women groups, Miss Hassana Vakkai, said the Supreme court judgement has given Tarabans more hope. She said “you know all eyes are on Taraba now and we have similar issues with Zamfara and Benue. The Supreme Court cleared those governors. They were not PDP states but we have the same case. But Rivers is a fellow PDP state. So we are confident that the Supreme Court is the final hope of the poor masses of Taraba. We are not from Rivers state. In fact, if you ask me where Rivers state is, i would tell you i don’t know but thank God for radio. We heard the news and we are rejoicing. The God and judges that did it for Wike would do it for Darius “But Alhaji Ahmed Yero, a stalwart of the APC in the state, said he can not believe his ears. He said” I just returned from market when my son told me of it. My reaction was that it is a lie. But now I’m really shocked. How can the Supreme Court do that? There were no elections in Rivers this i know. My fear now is that this Wike’s victory might have foreclosed our chances in Taraba but we wait to see. All hope is not lost but I’m really sad. ”
Speaking on the Wike win , a pro-PDP.organisation, Taraba Mandate Group (TMG) , said a victory for one is victory for all. In a statement signed by the group’s Public Relations Officer, Gani Bako, TMG said ” Governor Wike victory is another sign that, after all is said and done, the country’s Judiciary is still the best. Wike was a helpless man because former governor Amaechi was boasting with federal might because he is now a minister. It is like our situation where Aisha Alhassan has continued to beat her chest saying she has federal connections. But the Supreme court is not where anyone can be boasting of any might. Those judges are above all sentiments. They are special people. We read with laughter when one comedian accused Governor Darius of coughing out some millions to bribe judges. May be that is the style of the APC and their candidate because she once said she knew the outcome of judgements before they were even announced. But we don’t have such connections. We only rely on God and the Judiciary to save us from those who want to steal our mandate by force. “
