In a bid to introduce a new dimension to Intracity Transport Service in the Benin metropolis, SmartCab, Nigeria, has launched a technologically driven commercial taxi service.

The cab service which commenced on Monday was launched over the weekend in Benin City, as interested drivers were seen registering to be part of the new innovation.

Speaking at the event, SmartCab Nigeria Country Manager, Mr Jubril Arogundade, said that, the technologically driven Cab service is a platform that enables potential passengers to get connected to their drivers.

“Traditionally, a cab driver or taxi driver in the city will stay at a point to wait for passengers to come to them, or probably stop them by the road, and sometimes a lot of drivers stay on the road without getting one passenger.

“What happen is that, the passengers are somewhere else waiting for them, so we now developed an application that would connect that person wherever the person is, to you driver looking for them”. Mr Arogundade said

On his part, Benin city Manager, SmartCab Nigeria, Samson Bakare, said, “in Nigeria, Benin city has the highest numbers of people travelling abroad, and they experience the best of Cab services overseas, so we want them to experience the best also, when they come home”.

Bakare however noted that, “we are not taking the business from this people; we are just acting as middlemen connecting the driver and the rider. We want a situation whereby the movement of persons (transportation) will be done technologically, for the security of both persons and life”.

Highpoint of the occasion was driver’s enlightenment session, Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Edo Sector Command, Benin.
