U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, criticised the EU’s stance on scrutinising the rule of law in Poland, saying that the bloc had “strongly politicised’’ the matter.

“The EU does not hesitate to use the issue of rule of law to reach its goals,’’ Mosbacher said in an interview with Super Express, a Polish tabloid, without elaborating on what these goals are.
According to the ambassador, no U.S. company present in Poland, has expressed concern about the state of the rule of law there and they are performing very well in the country.
“The West had not yet ‘come to terms’ with the fact that Poland and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe are no longer the peripheries of the continent as was the case under communism previously,’’ Mosbacher said.
Poland has been at loggerheads with the EU over its broad-ranging judicial reforms since the ascent to power of the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party in 2015.
The EU is concerned that the reforms by the conservative nationalist party are undermining judicial independence and may be an attempt to subjugate the judiciary to the executive power.
