Scientist Advocates for Adoption of Reverse Vaccinology in Nigerian Universities

Dr. Ayodeji Durojaye, a scientist, has called on Nigerian universities to integrate reverse vaccinology into their research frameworks to advance bioscience and improve national health security. In his recent study, “Integrating Reverse Vaccinology into Bioscience Research,” Durojaye emphasized that this modern approach could enhance Nigeria’s capacity to tackle emerging infectious diseases.

Reverse vaccinology, a cutting-edge vaccine development method, utilizes the genetic material of pathogens to identify potential antigens capable of triggering immune responses. This approach is faster and more precise compared to traditional vaccine development techniques. It leverages computational tools to identify vaccine targets more efficiently.

Durojaye highlighted the advantages of reverse vaccinology, including accelerating vaccine development for quicker responses to health crises, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in bioinformatics, immunology, molecular biology, and data science, and elevating Nigerian universities to global health leadership by addressing local and international challenges.

As an example, Durojaye cited his team’s research, “Identification of a Potential mRNA-based Vaccine Candidate against the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Glycoprotein: A Reverse Vaccinology Approach,” where they developed an mRNA-based vaccine candidate targeting COVID-19. Their study identified a promising B cell epitope, the peptide sequence “YLQPRTFLL,” using advanced bioinformatics analyses. The research received recognition, earning the Wiley Award for being the top-downloaded article in ChemistrySelect.

Dr. Durojaye believes that adopting reverse vaccinology could position Nigeria as a key player in global health and bolster efforts to address diseases like COVID-19 through innovative preventive measures.
