Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the recent ambush by bandits in Katsina State, which resulted in the deaths of security personnel and residents.
Naija News reports that the attack, confirmed by the state police command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, claimed approximately 20 lives, including four police officers and two members of the state-owned Community Watch Corps. The incident occurred on Sunday in the villages of Gidan Tofa and Dan Nakwabo in the Kankara Local Government Area.
Atiku, reacting via his X handle, voiced his concern over the increasing frequency of banditry and terrorism. He criticized the government’s apparent inaction despite the substantial annual budget allocated for defense.
“I am saddened by reports of the attack on Yargoje village in Kankara LGA of Katsina State, which claimed scores of lives and the kidnapping of vulnerable women and children,” Atiku stated. “It is also sad that the bandits ambushed the police armoured personnel carrier responding to the distress call at Gidan Tofa and Dan Nakwabo villages, killing four police officers and two members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps.”
He emphasized his worry that these violent acts have become routine, with the government appearing helpless and indifferent. Atiku called for the government to fulfill its duty to protect citizens’ lives and property.
“While I sympathize with the families of the victims, I will once again call on the government to be alive to its responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the citizens,” he concluded.
