President of the Senate , Senator Godswill Akpabio has tasked the Nigerian Institution Estate Surveyors and Valuers ( NIESV), to reflect on the experiences of professional bodies in nations as United Kingdom as Singapore in their contribution to national development
He stated this on Monday, in Abuja during the occasion of the Inaugurations lecture and ceremony of the 26th president of NIESV , Victor Adekunle Alonge.
While congratulating the Council for unwavering dedication to professionalism, patriotism and excellence , while delivering lectures on the theme of the occasion said that
The theme, “The Role of Professional Bodies in National Development: Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Perspective,” let us draw inspiration from the wisdom of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, who once said, “In the face of adversity, hope is our guiding light.” In our pursuit of a brighter future for our nation, let us hold onto that hope and let it propel us towards greatness and greater prosperity.
At the same time, let us reflect on the experiences of reputable professional bodies in nations such as the United Kingdom and Singapore as we ponder the significance of professional bodies in national development. In the United Kingdom, esteemed organizations like the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) have played a pivotal role in shaping policies, setting standards, and driving innovation in the fields of surveying and urban planning. Their contributions have advanced the built environment and fostered sustainable development across the United Kingdom.
Similarly, in Singapore, companies such as the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers (SISV) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) have been at the forefront of promoting excellence, professionalism, and best practices in the construction and real estate sectors. Through collaboration with government agencies and industry stakeholders, these companies have significantly contributed to Singapore’s success as a global hub for urban innovation and sustainable development. Therefore, the topic of our lecture today, has parallels in the global space.
As we contemplate the transformative impact of professional bodies on national development, let us strive to emulate the successes of these esteemed bodies and forge partnerships that will propel Nigeria towards a future of prosperity, sustainability, and inclusive growth. We must acknowledge the tireless efforts of our legislators in the Senate, who have championed the cause of surveying and valuers in Nigeria through groundbreaking legislation and visionary policies that uphold the highest standards of integrity.
Now, we eagerly await the wisdom and insights of our distinguished lecturer, who, incidentally is my colleague, and my brother, Sen. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, CON, the leader of the Tenth Senate. Let me note that he once remarked that in the arena of governance, the time for action is now. Therefore, let us seize this moment. Let us not squander this opportunity for progress.
NIESV, renowned for its exceptional reputation and unwavering dedication to ethical conduct, serves as a shining example of integrity within the realm of valuation and real estate. With President Alonge at the helm, there is no doubt that this institution will continue to thrive and spearhead the transformation of the built environment. However, let us implore NIESV to lead the charge in curbing the exploitation of tenants by real estate agents, particularly in bustling cities like Lagos and Abuja. We look to this esteemed organization to establish industry standards and elevate the professionalism of real estate agents, ensuring effective monitoring and enforcement. By accomplishing this, the Tenth National Assembly will be encouraged to enact laws that prioritize the welfare of Nigerians, confident that NIESV safeguards their interests and promotes the greater good, thereby relieving our people of these burdensome challenges.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, as we cast our gaze towards this horizon of possibility, let us remember that the destiny of our nation lies within each and every one of us. Together, united in purpose and vision, let us forge a path towards a Nigeria that is prosperous, just, and inclusive. In the words of the great American poet Maya Angelou, “We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated.” Let us rise above our challenges and embrace the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
