Edugate: Tinubu Urged by Peter Obi to Ensure Accountability

By Milcah Tanimu

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that those involved in the alleged scandal surrounding the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, are held accountable. In a statement on his X-handle platform, Obi emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation beyond the welcomed suspension of the minister.

Expressing disappointment, Obi highlighted the misuse of a ministry meant to address the suffering of the masses, turning it into a conduit for stealing from the poor. He stressed the urgency of addressing public sector corruption and called for a thorough inquiry to ensure all culpable parties are brought to justice.

Obi cautioned against treating the suspension as mere window dressing and urged the government to use it as an opportunity to hold all responsible parties accountable. He drew attention to the alleged fraudulent diversion of N585 million by Edu, coinciding with the investigation of the previous minister for a N37 billion misappropriation.

Emphasizing the severity of poverty among the people, Obi criticized the ruling elites for diverting funds intended for poverty alleviation. He called on the Tinubu administration to initiate a comprehensive, system-wide investigation into reported cases of fraud and corruption involving high-ranking government officials.
