Ekiti Returns to Awolowo-Era Farm Settlements for Food Security, Says Governor Oyebanji

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has announced plans to revive the farm settlement strategy introduced during the era of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo to promote agriculture and ensure food security. Speaking during a visit to the Ikere Farm Settlement on Tuesday, Oyebanji said his administration aims to reintegrate young people into farming through the “Bring Back Youth into Agriculture” initiative, a partnership with YSJ Farms that involves about 930 youths.

The governor revealed that within three weeks, construction of modern dormitories at the farm settlements would begin. The facilities will include sitting rooms, kitchens, security posts, and sick bays, designed to encourage youth participation in agriculture and turn Ekiti into a key agricultural hub.

Governor Oyebanji stressed that agriculture would be a priority in the state’s development, noting that investing in young farmers is crucial to addressing food insecurity and reducing the need for palliative measures. He explained that the state’s agricultural plans would mirror the success of Awolowo’s farm settlements, which focused on mass food production and youth empowerment.

The governor toured agricultural clusters in Eporo-Emure, Ikere, and Aramoko-Erio, interacting with the young farmers and assessing their needs, which included better roads, security, and mobility aids. Oyebanji assured them that his administration would address these issues and enhance security in farming areas to foster productivity.

In his closing remarks, Oyebanji urged local government chairmen to join the initiative and support its expansion, as more land will be cleared for the next stage of the program. He emphasized that agriculture is a profitable industry, citing that it enriches farmers in developed nations, and expressed optimism that Ekiti youths would reap long-term benefits from their involvement.

The Ogoga of Ikere Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado, praised the governor’s agricultural vision, while participants of the scheme lauded the government’s efforts in providing opportunities for self-development and economic contribution.
