First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Launches Young Farmers Club

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has officially launched the Young Farmers Club, Nigeria, an initiative of her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. The launch event took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

At the ceremony, Mrs. Tinubu symbolically presented membership cards, handbooks, and farming implements to pupils from various schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Young Farmers Club aims to revive traditional farming practices, create job opportunities, diversify the economy, and enhance food security in Nigeria.

Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that agriculture, which has historically been the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, can be revitalized with modern techniques and mechanization. She reminisced about the once-thriving groundnut pyramids, cotton plantations, palm oil cultivation, cocoa, and rubber plantations, and expressed a belief in their potential revival.

She quoted Thomas Jefferson, highlighting the importance of agriculture for contributing to real wealth, morals, and happiness. Mrs. Tinubu stressed that farming is more than an occupation—it’s a way of life that can create employment, diversify the economy, and ensure food security.

The Young Farmers Club will initially involve 12 pilot schools in the FCT, including upper primary and junior secondary school students. Each member has received a uniform, watering cans, and hoes provided by the Renewed Hope Initiative. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security will facilitate the program’s expansion nationwide, with interested schools encouraged to register with their state’s first lady for support.

Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, highlighted that the initiative will include training in modern farming techniques and technology to address climate change and promote sustainability. He also mentioned the National Greenhouse Farming Initiative and other programs designed to equip youth with skills for precision farming.

Mrs. Tinubu praised the efforts of those involved in realizing the project and urged continued support for the initiative’s goals.
