Gov. Ayade launches “Operation Akpakwu” to fight kidnapping, robbery, others
Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River on Thursday launched a special operation to flush out criminals from the state, especially kidnappers.Code-named “Operation Akpakwu”, the outfit draws personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.To enhance the operations, the governor handed over 100 patrol vehicles fitted with cutting edge communication gadgets, 10 power bikes and drones to the forces.
Ayade, who was flanked by all the Service Cmmanders in the state at the event, vowed to return the state, particularly Calabar, to the paradise it once was. He said that although statistics indicate that the state remains one of the safest in the country, recent incidents of criminality, especially kidnappings was alarming.
The governor, therefore, asked every criminal in the state to relocate immediately as the state will no longer be a haven for them. According to Ayade, the state will henceforth be too hot for kidnappers and other criminals, adding those caught would face the full wrath of the law.“ Cross River statistically remains the safest state in Nigeria. However as a state, we are used to the culture of zero kidnapping, zero cultism and zero robbery.“ In recent past, there has been an increase in the number of crime within the Niger Delta and the country as a whole.” This arises from the difficulty orchestrated by #EndSARS as well as COVID-19 which brought general poverty and hardship on the entire world.“
The instruction is very clear from Abuja, you must deal decisively with any form of criminality, banditry, cultism and kidnapping of any form. “Let this therefore be a strong message to every resident in Cross River, today is the end of that criminality,” he said. The governor blamed the spate of kidnappings and robberies in the state on outsiders, citing the police records of those arrested so far in the state over crimes. He stated that going forward every landlord in the state must account for every tenant as part of the regulations which he has signed into law under the Homeland security. Speaking on behalf of the Service Commanders in the state, the Cross River Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdulkadir Jimoh, commended Ayade for his proactive steps in crime fighting.He pledged the commitment of security agencies in the state to keeping Cross River safe and free from criminals.
Armed bandits have abducted 30 people during an attack on Zamfarawa village in Zugu District, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Zagazola Makama report that the attack occurred on Oct. 7 at about 2:20 p.m., when a large number of bandits stormed the community, shooting sporadically to scare residents.
The hoodlums were said to have whisked away 30 villagers to an unknown destination.
Following the incident, security forces have intensified efforts to trace and rescue the abducted victims.
The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two armed bandits during an exchange of fire with security operatives in Mada District, Gusau Local Government Area.
According to sources, the operation followed credible intelligence about an imminent bandit attack on villages within the Mada area.
The sources stated that at about 3:10 a.m. on Oct. 7, a joint team of police tactical operatives, community protection guards (CPG), and local hunters were deployed to Fegin Mahe village, where they laid an ambush along the suspected route of the bandits.
Three bandits were said to have approached the location and were immediately engaged in a gun battle by the security team.
Two of the bandits were killed during the encounter, while the third escaped with possible gunshot injuries.
The police said efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspect.
Three suspected kidnappers have been killed by a mob in Emu Orakwan community, Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Sources said that the incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 6, when hunters and farmers in the area sighted the suspects at Akabueze camp.
The suspects were said to be among those who allegedly murdered a woman identified as Mrs. Ogbona on Oct. 1.
It was gathered that upon receiving the information, villagers and farmers mobilised and descended on the suspects, inflicting severe injuries on them before the arrival of security operatives.
Army troops accompanied by police personnel, moved swiftly to the scene and met the suspects at the point of death.
They were immediately taken to the General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
Their remains have been deposited at Imiuwuguina Mortuary, while investigation into the incident is ongoing.
