The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benue State has announced the training of over 400 ad-hoc staff ahead of the upcoming bye-election scheduled for Saturday. This election aims to fill the vacant position of Guma 1 state constituency in the state assembly, left vacant by the winner of the March 18, 2023 election who accepted an appointment as a commissioner in the cabinet of Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia.
In a statement to the press, Terkaa Andyar, the Public Relations Officer for the INEC office in Makurdi, revealed that nonsensitive materials for the election have already been dispatched to the local government area. Andyar also confirmed the deployment of the trained ad-hoc staff, emphasizing their readiness for the exercise.
Addressing security concerns, Andyar mentioned that INEC has conducted several meetings with security chiefs in the state to ensure adequate security measures are in place during and after the election in Guma LGA.
The bye-election in Benue is part of a broader series of elections taking place across various states in Nigeria, including Ebonyi, Yobe, Kebbi, Lagos, Ondo, Taraba, Borno, Kaduna, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Jigawa, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto, and Zamfara. These elections signify an important democratic process, with INEC ensuring thorough preparations to conduct free, fair, and credible polls.
