Kaduna Government Takes Action, Shuts Down Al-Azhar Academy Following Fatal Student Abuse – Education

TRAGIC INCIDENT AT AL-AZHAR ACADEMY, ZARIA, AND TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE SCHOOL

1. The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) has been informed about a deeply unfortunate incident at Al-Azhar Academy, located on Kofar Gayan, Turunku Road, Zaria, Kaduna State. According to reports from the school, a tragic incident occurred as a result of disciplinary actions taken against a Junior Secondary School III (Basic 9) student, Marwan Nuhu Sambo, for absenteeism, ultimately leading to the student’s untimely demise on Friday, 20th October, 2023.

2. The KSSQAA, acting on behalf of the Kaduna State Government, conducted a fact-finding mission earlier today. The purpose of this mission was to piece together the events that unfolded, starting from Al-Azhar Academy where the incident took place, extending to the victim’s home for condolences and discussions with the bereaved family, as well as interactions with some of the victim’s schoolmates. The KSSQAA team also visited the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zaria City, where the school Principal and Vice-Principal were in custody. The fact-finding team subsequently visited Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria, where the student’s death was officially confirmed. Lastly, the KSSQAA team visited the cemetery where the victim was laid to rest, and an evidently fresh grave was observed.

3. The Kaduna State Government, led by His Excellency, Governor Uba Sani, is committed to creating a safe and just learning environment. In light of this, we urge the general public to maintain calm and law-abiding conduct as the investigation unfolds, with the ultimate goal of delivering justice.

4. In the interim, in accordance with the provisions of its establishment Act (amended in 2015), the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority has taken the decision to temporarily close Al-Azhar Academy, Zaria. The school premises will remain sealed until the investigation is concluded.
