Lawyer canvasses cultural reorientation programmes in basic schools
An Ilorin based legal practitioner, Mr Azeez Babatunde, has advocated need for cultural reorientation programmes in basic schools.
Babatunde, who made the call in Ilorin on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said children need earlier exposure to the values of African culture.
According to him, to revive the dying Africa culture, there is need to start from the basic schools.
“Most parents don’t care to show their children how rich the African culture is, rather they expose them to foreign culture.
“We cannot continue to pretend that Africa has no culture. It must start from the basic classes by showing the practical aspects of our culture to children.
“We need to show them the dress code, food, music, dance and other cultural ethics and values in Africa,” he said.
The legal practitioner explained that teaching social studies and culture in classes was not enough, rather it should be displayed and put into practice.
He called on Ministry of Culture and Tourism to embark on campaign to basic schools in the country to sensitise the children and imbibe in them the knowledge and values of Africa culture.
He also called on journalists, NGOs and private individuals to promote African culture by starting from the basic schools and organising public seminar.
“We cannot allow it to fade away, we cannot eraze it. Our culture is in us, we must pass to upcoming generation through teaching and demonstration,” he said.
Babatunde however advised parents to be proud of Africa culture and as well teach their children African way of life.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
