Niger Petrol Tanker Explosion Death Toll Rises to 98
The death toll from Saturday’s petrol tanker explosion in Niger State has risen to 98, with 69 injured and 20 shops destroyed, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). The previous figure on Sunday stood at 86 dead and 55 injured.
Abdullahi Baba-Arah, NSEMA’s Director General, revealed on Monday that more victims succumbed to injuries sustained during the fire incident.
Hospitals Report Rising Casualties
Out of 43 injured patients admitted to the General Hospital Suleja, seven have died due to severe burns. Similarly, at the General Hospital Sabon-Wuse, three of the 23 injured have also passed away.
Specialist Care:
- 10 patients from the General Hospital Suleja were referred to Abuja for advanced treatment.
- 3 patients have been discharged after satisfactory treatment.
Government Intervention
The Niger State government and the Federal Government have pledged to cover all medical expenses for the injured. Those referred to Abuja will also receive free intensive care.

The tragedy unfolded on Saturday morning when a speeding petrol tanker overturned, spilling its fuel. Residents rushed to collect the fuel before the tanker ignited, causing a devastating fire.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
