In Gombe, police have arrested 111 individuals in connection with recent protests, accusing them of displaying foreign flags without authorization. The force reported that the demonstrations led to significant violence, resulting in injuries to officers and damage to police vehicles.
Among those arrested, nine face charges related to direct assaults on police officers and involvement in looting during the protests. Vandalism was widespread, affecting several locations including the Gombe State Revenue Recovery Tribunal, Bima Lodge, the Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reform, NITEL Company, and Blue-J Motors.
Police spokesperson Abdullahi underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law, noting that such violent actions disrupt both community life and local businesses. Of the 111 arrests, 92 individuals are specifically charged with vandalism and theft.
Authorities have managed to recover some of the stolen items, though details on the extent of these recoveries remain unspecified. Additionally, ten individuals were detained on August 5, 2024, for displaying foreign flags during the protests.
