By: Our Reporter
The group being led by Rivers State Governor, Nyeson Wike in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may have opted to support Labour Party, candidate Peter Obi in the Presidential elections, while pursuing their other interests in other positions still under the PDP.
In the face of the deepening crisis in the PDP, coupled with the seeming reluctance to accede to their demands, a source close to the Rivers State Governor gave insight into the likely move.
According to him, the Nwike group has been networking under the tutelage of former Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar to form a coalition in support of a South East President, if the country hopes to survive.
He said President Obasanjo reached out to Nwike and his group after consultation with the duo of Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, on the way out of a looming danger ahead of the country in the event of the perceived estrangement of the South East from national politics.
The Nwike group seem to have agreed with this proposition, but have decided to maintain the suspense over their final direction in the next elections.
Contrary to speculations, he said, that they are planning to join the ruling APC, our source said the Labour Party offers a safer ground and guarantees their continued relevance beyond the elections.
He confided in us that, some of the recent revelations about secret memos in the APC and the alleged bribery scandal in the PDP had the imprimatur of insiders working to undo the leading parties for the Labour Party to takeover.
Similarly, the surveys which gave headship to Peter Obi were deliberately manipulated to engender public confidence in the Labour Party candidate.
He said, he is an insider and has run several errands on the matter, stressing that, the final position of the group will manifest when Obi releases the list of his campaign council, which will contain names of allies of parties working in this regard
“We plan to relocate the soul of the PDP into the Labour Party for Peter Obi and relocate it back to the PDP for other elections”, he said.
“We cannot join the APC to fight our own party. We have been fighting to dislodge them, so it will be uncharitable to help them win, but our minds are set on joining well meaning Nigerians to change the tide of leadership in this country. I cannot confirm to you the other people involved, but you can be sure of our own group’s thinking”, he added.
Analyst believe that, the direction, the Nyeson Wike group goes could have far reaching impact on the outcome of the 2023 elections.
