The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) has cautioned political parties and politicians in the state against employing the services of thugs to prosecute the November 18, 2017 council poll in the state.
The Chairman of the Commission, Dr Usman Ajidagba handed down the warning during a stakeholders meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Ilorin on Saturday.
Ajidagba said the commission has enlisted the support of all security agencies in the state in maintaining peace, law and order before, during and after the council poll, adding that instead of engaging thugs, political parties should embark on mobilisation campaigns and as well sensitise their supporters on appropriate thumb printing of the ballot papers to guide against void votes.
The KWSIEC chairman, however, assured all political parties, participating in the election of a level playing ground.
Representatives of security agencies in the state assured stakeholders at the meeting that water tight security would be provided before, during and after the election.
In his contribution, a former state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo called for measures against ballot snatching and violence during the election.
He advised KWSIEC to liaise with all security agencies in the state to help in ensuring violence free elections in all parts of the state.
