Reps constitute committee on minimum wage for passage next week

A twelve member adhoc committee has been constituted to parliamentary review the minimum wage amendment bill submitted to the National Assembly.
This followed the adoption of the second reading of the National Minimum Wage Amendment Bill at the House of Representatives.
The Executive Bill which was read for the first time today Thursday, was approved by the National Council of State meeting earlier in the week.
In passing the bill, the lawmakers stressed the importance of workers’s welfare to the development of any nation.
While describing the increase as inadequate, the lawmakers said given the high inflation since the last review that lead to increase in cost of living.
The lawmakers also requested that the minimum wage be periodically review every other year, to meet the reality on ground and to reduce corruption tendencies among public servants.
Passing the second reading of the bill, the Speaker explained that the adhoc committee will meet all relevant stakeholders on Monday to pave the way for passing the bill next week.
The National Council of State had on Tuesday approved a Twenty Seven Thousand Naira Minimum wage for workers in the Country while the Federal Government had proposed a Thirty Thousand Minimum wage for its Workers, which the lawmakers described as inadequate.
