ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has strongly condemned the recent abductions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State and pupils and teachers in Kaduna State. Over 280 pupils and teachers from Government Secondary School and LEA Primary School in Kuriga, Kaduna State, were abducted by bandits, while 200 internally displaced women were kidnapped in Ngala, Borno State.
In a statement by its Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, AAN likened these abductions to previous tragic incidents like the Chibok and Dapchi girls, emphasizing the urgent need for action to prevent further harm to the abducted individuals.
AAN called on the Borno and Kaduna state governments, as well as the Federal Government, to prioritize the immediate rescue and reunification of the abductees with their families. Mamedu stressed that every moment without action increases the risk of tragic outcomes similar to previous abduction cases.
The group demanded accountability and justice for all victims of the abductions and urged security agencies to learn from past mistakes and take decisive action to prevent further harm.
Additionally, AAN highlighted the importance of implementing the Safe Schools Initiative to ensure a safe learning environment for all children in Nigeria. They emphasized that security agencies must prioritize the rescue of the abductees and called on the international community and civil society organizations to support efforts for their safe return.
In conclusion, AAN reiterated that the lives and well-being of the abducted individuals must be the top priority of the government, urging swift action to ensure their safe rescue and return.
