Gender equality advocates are urging the implementation of gender-responsive policies to tackle the persistent challenges faced by women in the country. This call was made during a book presentation titled ‘Politics, X and Power,’ authored by Adaora Sydney-Jack, Executive Director of Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), held in Abuja on Thursday.
Ms. Sydney-Jack emphasized the importance of political will from governments at all levels to involve more women in policymaking and its execution. She highlighted the need for political parties to go beyond token leadership positions for women and ensure their active involvement in decision-making roles.
Amina Arong, the National Women’s Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed frustration over the lack of significant progress in women’s political participation despite her 25 years of experience in politics. She called for gender-sensitive men to support women’s inclusion in decision-making processes.
Monalisa Chinda, Founder of the Arise Monalisa Foundation, stressed the importance of reevaluating the inclusion of women in various spheres of society.
Abubakar Sulaiman, the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), commended the book ‘Politics, X and Power,’ highlighting its relevance for academia, research, and policymaking.
Chima Amadi, the guest speaker, emphasized the necessity for Nigeria to strengthen democratic institutions, including the judiciary, electoral commission, and legislature, to uphold the rule of law and prevent abuses of power.
