AGF Urges Former Kogi Governor to Surrender to EFCC

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has called on the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to present himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement released to the press on Thursday, the AGF cautioned against obstructing the EFCC in the performance of its lawful duties.

Expressing concern over the challenges faced by the EFCC in its efforts to prosecute the former governor, the AGF emphasized the agency’s authority to invite individuals for questioning, regardless of their status.

He stressed the importance of cooperating with the EFCC and warned against hindering its work, highlighting that evading the law only exacerbates issues.

While affirming his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the protection of Nigerians’ rights, the AGF emphasized the need for state institutions to function effectively.

He encouraged individuals summoned by the EFCC or any other agency to comply with the law and honor such invitations rather than resorting to self-help methods.

The EFCC had filed a 19-count charge against the ex-governor, accusing him of involvement in money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of approximately N84 billion.

Efforts by the EFCC to arrest him at his Abuja residence were reportedly thwarted by the incumbent governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, who allegedly whisked him away in an official vehicle.

EFCC Warns Against Obstructing Operations

Reacting to the events, the EFCC issued a warning through its Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, stating that it would no longer tolerate obstruction in its operations.

The agency reminded the public that obstructing EFCC officers constitutes a criminal offense, punishable by a minimum of five years’ imprisonment under the EFCC Establishment Act.

Highlighting instances where individuals under investigation have resorted to obstructing EFCC operations, the agency stressed that such actions would be met with appropriate punitive measures.

The EFCC emphasized its commitment to upholding the law and warned against any attempts to obstruct its operations, asserting that such actions would face consequences.
