Senate President Godswill Akpabio has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reinstating Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Nigeria we hail thee.” During a special National Assembly session marking President Tinubu’s one-year anniversary, Akpabio highlighted the anthem’s significance in fostering unity and brotherhood among Nigerians, transcending tribal and linguistic differences.
Akpabio commended Tinubu’s overall performance in his first year and emphasized that the reintroduction of the old national anthem symbolizes a revolutionary step towards national unity. He stated, “Of all the significant things you have done, one of the most profound is taking us back to our genealogy. Though we belong to different tribes and have different tongues, we will refer to ourselves as brothers as we move forward in battle, sports, or other endeavors, we must hail Nigeria.”
He described President Tinubu’s visit to the National Assembly as a “waka pass” from Nollywood, symbolizing his respect for the parliament. Akpabio added, “Before you came, myself and my brother, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, explained the purpose of this visit. You intend to celebrate Democracy Day on June 12, but out of honor and respect for the National Assembly, you chose to pass through here on your first anniversary. The voice of the National Assembly is the voice of Nigeria.”
In response, President Tinubu thanked the lawmakers for their cooperation and understanding, acknowledging their role as crucial leaders. He stated, “I came to say thank you. You are first and foremost leaders that speak for our people. You have been at the forefront of this struggle. This institution of hallowed chambers represents our consciousness for freedom and a sense of belonging. You rolled out the latest National Anthem, Nigeria, we hail thee. This is our diversity.”
The reintroduction of the old national anthem during President Tinubu’s administration is seen as a significant step towards enhancing national identity and unity among Nigerians.
