On Friday, the African Union (AU) force reported that the Al-Shabaab insurgent group launched an attack on one of its military bases in Somalia. Al-Shabaab has been conducting a jihadist insurgency against the country’s central government for over 15 years. The targeted army base, located in Bulo Marer, which is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) southwest of the capital, Mogadishu, came under the attack. The AU force, known as ATMIS, stated on social media that they are currently assessing the security situation. As of now, no casualties have been reported.
In the ongoing conflict in Somalia, the army and local militias called “macawisley” have recaptured significant areas in the central part of the country. This operation has been supported by the African Union (AU) force known as ATMIS, as well as airstrikes carried out by the United States.
However, despite these gains by the pro-government forces, the extremist group Al-Shabaab has continued to carry out deadly attacks against both civilians and military targets. One of the deadliest attacks occurred in October, when two car bombings targeted the education ministry in the capital city of Mogadishu, resulting in the tragic loss of 121 lives.
The situation in Somalia remains volatile and marked by ongoing clashes between the government forces and Al-Shabaab militants. Efforts are being made to restore stability and security in the country, but the threat posed by the extremist group persists.
