“Anambra State Government Rescues Domestic Abuse Victim, Initiates Legal Action Against Perpetrator”

By Milcah Tanimu

In a laudable display of commitment to protecting its citizens, the Anambra State Government, operating through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has orchestrated a successful rescue mission in Ezinifite, Aguata Local Government Area. This operation culminated in the liberation of Chidiebere Otenyi, a 19-year-old resident who had been subjected to severe domestic abuse.

The perpetrator, identified as Martha Umenweke, a woman in her late 60s, was swiftly apprehended and handed over to law enforcement authorities for thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution at the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka.

Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the Media Aide to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, conveyed these developments in a statement released on Friday. The intervention was sparked by a whistleblower who courageously reported the distressing situation to the ministry.

In response to the distressing circumstances surrounding Chidiebere Otenyi’s plight, Commissioner Ify Obinabo expressed her vehement condemnation and resolve to hold the perpetrator accountable for her reprehensible actions. Obinabo, visibly incensed by the extent of the young woman’s injuries, affirmed that Martha Umenweke would face the full weight of the law for her egregious conduct.

Chidiebere Otenyi, hailing from Nkanu, Enugu State, recounted the harrowing ordeal she endured at the hands of her employer. Allegations of theft, denied vehemently by Otenyi, purportedly triggered Martha Umenweke’s violent outburst, resulting in the teenager being subjected to brutal physical assault.

Further inquiry revealed disturbing details of Otenyi’s living conditions, including allegations of regular starvation and arbitrary punishment. Shockingly, it was discovered that despite being 19 years old, Otenyi was still enrolled in Primary 3, purportedly due to her employer’s decision to demote her.

During interrogation, Martha Umenweke attempted to justify her reprehensible actions by accusing Otenyi of theft. She further implicated an accomplice, Mr. David, who reportedly assisted in restraining the victim following the assault.

Chidimma Ikeanyionwu affirmed that the case has been promptly transferred to law enforcement authorities for further investigation and prosecution. This swift and decisive action underscores the Anambra State Government’s commitment to upholding justice and safeguarding the welfare of its citizens.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of domestic abuse and the urgent need for robust measures to combat such atrocities within communities. The Anambra State Government’s proactive intervention in this case sets a precedent for decisive action against perpetrators of violence and underscores the imperative of collective efforts to protect the vulnerable.
