Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, confirmed on Tuesday that Nigerian importers will soon clear their goods at Cotonou ports in Benin Republic. This decision came after a two-day meeting in Abuja with the customs service heads of Benin Republic.

The meetings led to several agreements aimed at enhancing trade ties between Nigeria and Benin Republic and addressing smuggling issues. Adewale emphasized building trust between both countries, indicating that Nigerian importers using Cotonou ports would be able to clear and pay duties for their goods, making them eligible to enter Nigeria.

Regarding concerns over vehicle smuggling, Adewale stated that it’s not just about vehicles. Goods arriving at Cotonou ports can have duties assessed and paid, similar to the process in Lagos or Port Harcourt. Steps are being planned to fully implement this system, with timelines soon to be set.

Adewale highlighted that such partnerships will boost customs administration, trade, and regional cooperation. He remarked, “This is a significant step towards strengthening collaboration and promoting legitimate trade in the West African region.”
