The Federal Government has announced plans to overhaul the land transport sub-sector through the implementation of the National Land Transport Policy (NLTP), marking a pivotal moment in transportation development.
Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, revealed this during a stakeholders’ validation forum aimed at reviewing and endorsing the draft NLTP document. Alkali emphasized the critical role of land transportation as a primary link to social, regional, and international markets, underscoring the urgency for transformative policies.
Alkali stressed the need for collaborative efforts in finalizing the NLTP, highlighting its potential to drive sustainable growth across various sectors including agriculture, commerce, tourism, and education. He urged stakeholders to contribute their expertise to ensure the policy’s effectiveness.
Stakeholders from diverse backgrounds within the transportation sector acknowledged their responsibility in shaping the NLTP, recognizing its importance in addressing challenges within the land transportation system. They highlighted its potential to reduce congestion, enhance connectivity, and foster inclusivity.
The draft NLTP encompasses a holistic approach to Nigeria’s land transportation system, encompassing rail, road, pipeline, and intermodal connectivity. It addresses key issues such as climate change, capacity building, and inclusive transportation, with a focus on implementation strategies.
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation/Marine and Blue Economy, Olufemi Oloruntola, underscored the collaborative effort behind the NLTP’s development and emphasized its significance for the nation’s socio-economic growth. He urged stakeholders to critically evaluate the policy framework to ensure its alignment with Nigeria’s long-term vision for transportation.
