In a significant move, the government of Niger Republic has officially reopened its land border with Nigeria in Konni for operational activities. This decision follows closely on the heels of the recent reopening of the Illela land border by the Nigeria Customs Service.
The restoration of border operations comes after the Federal Government, under the directive of President Bola Tinubu, initiated efforts to normalize relations with Niger. This included the restoration of electricity supply to Niger, which had been suspended as part of sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in response to a coup in Niger in July 2023.
The coup had led to the arrest and deposition of Niger’s President-elect, Mohamed Bazoum, by officers of the Niger Presidential Guard. In response, ECOWAS leaders, led by President Tinubu, demanded the restoration of constitutional order in Niger and condemned Bazoum’s arrest as illegal.
In compliance with President Tinubu’s directive to reopen borders, the Nigeria Customs Service reopened the Kamba land border. Controller Iheanacho Ojike emphasized the strategic importance of the Kamba border, particularly its role in revenue generation for Kebbi State.
The reopening of borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic signifies a positive step towards regional cooperation and economic integration, marking a significant milestone in efforts to promote stability and prosperity in the region.
