The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and affiliated unions have commenced a protest in Abuja over concerns about the high cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and general hardship in the country. The protest started from the Labour House Headquarters in Abuja, featuring various unions, including the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the FCT Council, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers, among others. Placards were displayed with inscriptions addressing issues like poverty, hunger, the need to support local industries, and the call for the government to fix local refineries and end subsidy. NLC President Joe Ajaero stated that the protest aimed to make the government aware of how Nigerians feel about the current economic challenges. The nationwide protest follows a 14-day strike notice issued by NLC and the Trade Union Congress over the government’s failure to implement agreements reached in October 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy. The protest is scheduled for February 27 and 28, 2024.
