Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, has voiced his concerns over the political aspirations of Nigerian youths, stating that they seem primarily interested in securing positions as Personal Assistants (PAs) to Presidents and governors.
Sowore made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, reflecting on the recent swearing-in of 44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the President of Senegal.
Addressing the youth’s approach to politics, Sowore highlighted a tendency among Nigerian youth to aspire to roles as special assistants to political leaders rather than demonstrating a clear ambition for leadership roles.
He expressed the need for Nigerian youths to adopt a more proactive and ambitious stance in politics, drawing inspiration from the new political dispensation in Senegal.
Sowore emphasized the importance of youthfulness in leadership, advocating for leaders who are dynamic, responsive, and technologically savvy.
While acknowledging legislative efforts such as the Not Too Young Bill, which enables youth participation in governance, Sowore urged Nigerian youths to seize power rather than relying solely on legal frameworks.
According to Sowore, the acquisition of power should not be contingent upon legislative amendments but should instead be pursued actively by the youth themselves.
