Awka — A tragic road accident involving a truck loaded with cement occurred on Tuesday at Green Energy Oil and Gas filling station in Eke Awgbu, Orumba North local government area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of five individuals.
The truck, owned by BUA and without a registration number, lost control and crashed, hitting multiple vehicles in the process. Among the affected vehicles were a commercial tricycle with registration number NZH84LG, a commercial QLINK motorcycle with registration number OLU245QV, and a private Honda motorcycle without a registration number.
Margaret Onabe, the Ag Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Anambra State, confirmed that five people, including four males and one female, died instantly. Several others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Onabe stated that the probable cause of the crash was either excessive speed or brake failure. “According to an eyewitness, the driver of the truck was speeding, experienced brake failure, lost control, and collided with other vehicles at a checkpoint before crashing,” she explained.
The crash involved eleven individuals in total—nine male adults and two female adults. Five male adults and one female adult sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four male adults and one female adult were killed.
Before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team from RS5.35 Igboukwu, passersby had already rushed the injured victims to the Referral Health Centre in Awgbu, while the deceased were taken to St Joseph’s Hospital mortuary in Adazi. The rescue team managed the traffic in the area and cleared the obstruction caused by the accident.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Adeoye Irelewuyi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to maintain safe speeds while driving.
