Currency Printing: Diaspora Forum Commend CBN over Plans to Assist Gambia
Nigerians in Diaspora under the aegis of Diaspora Forum on Small and Medium Enterprises have thrown their weight behind the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over it decision to assist the Gambian Central Bank to print its currency saying such act will boost the image of the country as the giant of Africa.
Comrade Fidelis Semaka, president of the forum stated this in a statement while reacting to reports that Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emiefele hinted of possibility to assist the Gambian apex bank to print the Gambian currency.
The forum maintained that the plan was commendable as it has the potential of expanding the nation’s minting capacity and positioning the country as the giant of Africa.
“Printing the Gambian currency will expand the printing capacity of the Nigerian security and minting company. It will also bring in foreign exchange for the economy as well as enhance the face of the country as the true economic giant of Africa.
“When the world was struck with global pandemic, the CBN led the fight through multiple Interventions that cushioned the negative effect of the pandemic; this among others revived our confidence in the Nigerian economy as Diasporas who have so much hope in the country”, ”, the group noted.
The group further said with such confidence given to them by the Nigeria’s apex bank, they are justified that Diaspora remittances and other interventions were safe and secured.
“Godwin Emiefele has brought a new face to national banking in Nigeria through sterling reforms, he has institutionalised resilience, dedication to duty and total commitment to fiscal responsibility of the economy and deserves commendation”.
The group said president Buhari administration got the selection of the central bank management right more than any other.
“Emiefeles leadership style has confirmed that indeed what Mr President saw for Nigerians was only a matter time”
The group urged the apex bank to continue to expand its policy framework for the overall benefit of Nigerians.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
