FRSC records 5,320 crashes, 2,471 deaths nationwide in 6 months
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) recorded 5,320 road crashes (Road Traffic Crashes) and 2,471 deaths in the first half of 2021 nationwide.
The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO) Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM), Mr Bisi Kazeem, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
Kazeem said that the recorded crashes and deaths occurred between January and June 2021, adding that the corps had not relented in its efforts at reducing carnage on the highways.
He said that the 5,320 RTCs that occurred in the country involved a total of 8,808 vehicles, adding that 2,471 people were killed.
He said that 15,882 people sustained various injuries, while 15,398 were rescued from the crashes without injuries.
This, he said, brought to 33,751 the total number of people involved in the RTCs nationwide between January and June.
Kazeem noted that in the period under review available statistics showed that in January alone the FRSC recorded a total of 923 RTCs across the country.
Zone RS1, comprising Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, according to him, had the highest crashes, with 148.
He said in February a total of 808 RTCs were recorded nationwide with the most crashes, 121, happening in Zone RS2, comprising Lagos and Ogun.
“In March, the corps recorded 959 RTCs with most crashes, 140, also occurring in Zone RS2.
“In April, 955 RTCs occurred nationwide, with Zone RS 4, comprising Plateau, Nasarawa and Benue States recording 128, the highest in any zone.
“In the month of May, we recorded 936 crashes across the country, with a total of 158 occurred in RS 2 Lagos zone.
“In June, a total of 739 RTCs were recorded across the country.
The FRSC spokesman said that the corps also arrested 261,005 offenders nationwide between January and June for committing 281,765 road traffic offences.
He noted that mobile courts, set up by the FRSC, tried thousands of traffic offenders within the first half of the year.
He said convicts were appropriately sanctioned by the courts.
Armed bandits have abducted 30 people during an attack on Zamfarawa village in Zugu District, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Zagazola Makama report that the attack occurred on Oct. 7 at about 2:20 p.m., when a large number of bandits stormed the community, shooting sporadically to scare residents.
The hoodlums were said to have whisked away 30 villagers to an unknown destination.
Following the incident, security forces have intensified efforts to trace and rescue the abducted victims.
The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two armed bandits during an exchange of fire with security operatives in Mada District, Gusau Local Government Area.
According to sources, the operation followed credible intelligence about an imminent bandit attack on villages within the Mada area.
The sources stated that at about 3:10 a.m. on Oct. 7, a joint team of police tactical operatives, community protection guards (CPG), and local hunters were deployed to Fegin Mahe village, where they laid an ambush along the suspected route of the bandits.
Three bandits were said to have approached the location and were immediately engaged in a gun battle by the security team.
Two of the bandits were killed during the encounter, while the third escaped with possible gunshot injuries.
The police said efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspect.
Three suspected kidnappers have been killed by a mob in Emu Orakwan community, Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Sources said that the incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 6, when hunters and farmers in the area sighted the suspects at Akabueze camp.
The suspects were said to be among those who allegedly murdered a woman identified as Mrs. Ogbona on Oct. 1.
It was gathered that upon receiving the information, villagers and farmers mobilised and descended on the suspects, inflicting severe injuries on them before the arrival of security operatives.
Army troops accompanied by police personnel, moved swiftly to the scene and met the suspects at the point of death.
They were immediately taken to the General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
Their remains have been deposited at Imiuwuguina Mortuary, while investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Again 30 villagers abducted in Zamfara.
