Court Grants IGP Possession Of Seized Property

The Federal High Court sitting in Benin and presided over by Justice O.O. Tokode has granted the Inspector General of Police possession of the immovable property lying, being and situate at No. 1 Adesuwa Grammar School Road, GRA, Benin City.
The order came on Wednesday pursuant to a motion ex-parte dated and filed on the 28th day of June, 2017 with charge No. FHC/B/41C/2017 against a Benin based legal practitioner, Dele Edokpayi and Circular Merchant Ltd as defendants over an alleged offence of forgery contrary to Section 516 and 467 of the Criminal Code.
The prayers in the motion ex-parte moved by M.O. Omosun (Esq.) the said property seized by the Police during the arrest of the accused person would be determined pending the conclusion of trial of the accused person.
Granting the order, Justice Tokode stated that if the applicant continues with the business operation on the property during the pendency of the charge herein, the applicant shall deposit the proceeds in an interest yielding account for that purpose in a first generation bank in the name of the Inspector General of Police.s
The motion also sought the court for such further order or orders it may deem fit to make in the circumstances of the case and was further supported by affidavit deposed to by one Adaghe Akomen of the Nigeria Police, zone 5 Headquarters, Benin City.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
