IPCR Commends Nigerian Army’s Efforts in Conflict Management and Resolution
The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has lauded the Nigerian Army’s Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) for its significant role in managing and resolving conflicts. The commendation was made during a courtesy visit by IPCR representatives to the OPSH Headquarters in Jos, Plateau State.
Adejo Haruna, the Head of the IPCR’s Zonal Office in Jos, expressed satisfaction with the proactive measures implemented by OPSH to address the crisis in Plateau State. The IPCR is a federal government agency focused on conflict resolution and peace-building in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Haruna emphasized the importance of employing both non-kinetic approaches, such as research, interventions, and capacity building, as well as kinetic approaches to effectively address conflicts and prevent their recurrence on the Plateau.
During the visit, Haruna presented a comprehensive report on the dynamics of conflict in Nigeria, specifically on the Plateau, and highlighted the need for continuous collaboration between IPCR and OPSH to achieve lasting peace and conflict resolution in areas prone to conflict.
OPSH Appreciates IPCR’s Support in Conflict Management
Major General Abdulsalami Bagudu Ibrahim, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army (NA) and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), expressed gratitude to the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) for their support in managing conflicts, particularly the recurring farmer/herder crisis on the Plateau.
During the visit by IPCR representatives, General Ibrahim emphasized the importance of community support in tackling insecurity and urged people to unite against those who seek to disrupt peace. He assured that OPSH would continue to collaborate with relevant organizations and stakeholders to implement new strategies aimed at improving security, protecting lives and property, and resolving conflicts in communities on the Plateau and across the nation.
General Ibrahim acknowledged that conflict-free societies are rare, but the ability to swiftly resolve conflicts is crucial for a healthy society.
The visit included the presentation of a comprehensive report on the dynamics of conflict in Nigeria, discussions on the way forward, the exchange of souvenirs, and group photographs as highlights of the engagement.
Armed bandits have abducted 30 people during an attack on Zamfarawa village in Zugu District, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Zagazola Makama report that the attack occurred on Oct. 7 at about 2:20 p.m., when a large number of bandits stormed the community, shooting sporadically to scare residents.
The hoodlums were said to have whisked away 30 villagers to an unknown destination.
Following the incident, security forces have intensified efforts to trace and rescue the abducted victims.
The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two armed bandits during an exchange of fire with security operatives in Mada District, Gusau Local Government Area.
According to sources, the operation followed credible intelligence about an imminent bandit attack on villages within the Mada area.
The sources stated that at about 3:10 a.m. on Oct. 7, a joint team of police tactical operatives, community protection guards (CPG), and local hunters were deployed to Fegin Mahe village, where they laid an ambush along the suspected route of the bandits.
Three bandits were said to have approached the location and were immediately engaged in a gun battle by the security team.
Two of the bandits were killed during the encounter, while the third escaped with possible gunshot injuries.
The police said efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspect.
Three suspected kidnappers have been killed by a mob in Emu Orakwan community, Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Sources said that the incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 6, when hunters and farmers in the area sighted the suspects at Akabueze camp.
The suspects were said to be among those who allegedly murdered a woman identified as Mrs. Ogbona on Oct. 1.
It was gathered that upon receiving the information, villagers and farmers mobilised and descended on the suspects, inflicting severe injuries on them before the arrival of security operatives.
Army troops accompanied by police personnel, moved swiftly to the scene and met the suspects at the point of death.
They were immediately taken to the General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
Their remains have been deposited at Imiuwuguina Mortuary, while investigation into the incident is ongoing.
