OPC Urges Tinubu to Halt Proposed Electricity Tariff Increase
The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has issued a plea to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to intervene and prevent the planned electricity tariff hike proposed by distribution companies in the country. The increase, scheduled to commence from July 1, has been criticized by the OPC as unjust, oppressive, and contrary to the interests of the people.
In a statement released by OPC’s General Secretary, Bunmi Fasehun, the organization expressed its concerns, emphasizing that the move aimed to discredit President Bola Tinubu’s new administration. The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria have also rejected the proposed tariff hike.
OPC President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, highlighted the burdens faced by Nigerians due to the removal of fuel subsidy and emphasized that increasing electricity tariffs would further add to citizens’ difficulties, portraying the Tinubu administration as uncaring.
Afolabi criticized distribution companies, stating that citizens were now responsible for purchasing their own infrastructure, including poles, transformers, cables, and prepaid meters. He accused the distribution companies of exploiting customers by imposing exorbitant bills despite persistent blackouts and power failures.
Instead of raising electricity tariffs, OPC suggested that distribution companies follow the example of telecommunications companies, which have reduced the cost of calls and data for consumers. Afolabi called on the distribution companies to justify the substantial public funds they have received in the past, considering that the distribution segment of the electricity value chain has already been privatized.
Furthermore, OPC demanded that President Tinubu instruct distribution companies to either improve their services under the existing tariff or surrender their licenses. The organization also advocated for the abolition of territorial monopolies in the electricity sector, enabling consumers to choose and switch between different distribution companies, as seen in the telecommunications industry and other countries. OPC believes that competition will encourage DISCOs to deliver quality service to avoid losing customers to rival suppliers.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
