Emefiele: DSS Undermining Rule of Law – Duduwa Youths Concerned.

Published

on

A socio-cultural group known as Oduduwa Youths has leveled accusations against the Department of State Services (DSS) for disregarding a court order regarding the detention of Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The Abuja High Court, sitting at Maitama, had issued an order last week, Thursday, instructing the DSS to release Emefiele from detention within seven days or present him before the court for charges.

In a statement released on Friday by the group’s leader, Yomi Oladimeji, they pointed out that various court rulings had also demanded Emefiele’s release. The group went on to claim that the actions of the DSS were undermining the rule of law records of President Bola Tinubu.

To address this situation, Oduduwa Youths called for the immediate removal of the Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, for failing to comply with the court order to release Emefiele.

According to the group, the refusal of the DSS to release Emefiele or charge him in court signifies a breach of the president’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

The recent court rulings, as cited by the group, include one from the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, where Justice Hamza Muazu ordered the DSS to release Emefiele, asserting that any form of detention, regardless of its duration, is a violation of fundamental rights. The judge gave the DSS one week to either charge Emefiele or release him.

In another case before the same court, brought forward by Mr. Emefiele against various parties, the court nullified the arrest, detention, and interrogation of Mr. Emefiele by the DSS, as it was found to be in violation of a subsisting judgment and orders from Justice M. A. Hassan.

The group, through Mr. Peter Abang, Emefiele’s counsel, had asked the court to nullify the arrest and detention, citing the judgment delivered by Justice M. A. Hassan on December 29, 2022.

Furthermore, Hon. Justice Bello Kawu granted another prayer, setting aside any warrant of arrest obtained by the DSS for Emefiele’s arrest, detention, and interrogation related to allegations of terrorism financing, fraudulent practices, money laundering, round-tripping, or threat to national security since the date of Justice M. A. Hassan’s judgment.

The situation remains tense as Oduduwa Youths continue to advocate for the release of Mr. Emefiele and hold the DSS accountable for their actions in defiance of court orders.

“Despite these court rulings, the DSS has blatantly disregarded the judiciary. We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take swift action and dismiss the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, for his blatant disobedience and utter disrespect for the rule of law.”

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
